I have been on many RC cruises and here's how it is. All Royal Caribbean ships have a main formal dining room that is open for dinner and on most days also lunch and you can eat there for free all of the time. Most days the main dining room is also open for breakfast and you can eat there free then also.
All Royal Caribbean ships have what they call "specialty" restaurants; Chops, which is a steak house, and Portofino which is Italian. There IS a fee to eat dinner in either of theses specialty restaurants and its about $20 per person per visit. Both places require a reservation.
Some RC ships have a diner called Johnny Rockets which is open for lunch and there is a fee of $3.95 per person to eat there. The menu has hamburgers, hot dogs, onion rings, fries and a couple other things and you can eat as much as you want for the $3.95. BUT, you do have to pay for soft drinks and milk shakes or ice cream in Johnny Rockets.
There's really no reason to go to Johnny rockets unless you just want to sit somewhere different because all RC ships usually have hamburgers, hot dogs and fries in the buffet, called the Windjammer Cafe.
Not too sure about the Royal Cruises, but I just did the Princess Cruise and the food was include with the price. I think it will be the same for the Royal as well..
if you are planning on just eating in the main dinning room it is included, or any of the buffets. but what does cost extra is specialty restaurants. but there really is no need to go to the specialty restaurant unless it is a Special occasion because the dinning room has amazing food!
