"CLEAN ESN" means you can use the phone and have no problems.

Like most phones are reported stolen and if someone finds it and [or just finds it and wants to use it] resells it the phone will have a "bad esn" sort of. When you try to connect it the phone provider won't let you cause it's reported "stolen".
