I'm from Chicago and I've only visited each once for a short time and it was a while ago. I'm planning on teaching high school also. I enjoy the beach scene a lot but also large city life. I'm not too worried about crime (again, I'm from Chicago, used to it). I'm just wondering like personal preferences. Pro/con lists are appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

San Diego by far.
I've been to both cities numerous times, and I thoroughly enjoy San Diego each time I visit.
Some parts of LA are okay, but overall it's just not my type of city >_<
you can find lots of in the both cities in pros to see and to do the things and cons you will have to be aware with your health concerns, maps, road traffic, etiquettes, be aware with valuable things……..so on. So you should book your all travel itinerary before entering the cities. For instance you can check out http://www.southalltravel.co.uk/USA/Los-Angeles/

I was born in the Los Angeles area and spent my working years there. I have spent a few years in San Diego as a retiree. Because of my reasons for being in both places, its difficult to say. For scenery, entertainment, food, weather. and distance to travel to do these things, I prefer San Diego. Its less of a rat race.
However, since you are looking a career in teaching. I would prefer Los Angeles, where you will have more opportunities to find a job, and less expensive housing. They are both great places to live so I would pick L.A to for now, but retire in San Diego. I have been very happy with the choices I have made. Good Luck!
San Diego weirdly even though its closer to Mexico looks more like an American city allthough its still not perfect. North SD County is beautiful. LA is Mexico City, even the OC looks like Mehico these days.
san diego is a cleaner city than Los Angeles.
