The events of Karbala inspire us to become better Muslims, because all those people who were slaughtered in those battles were slaughtered defending Islam.

However, there is absolutely no justification for the self-mutilation, and I am horrified that people still do things like this in the twenty-first century. I thought it was haraam to harm yourself? That's why drugs are haraam, that's why alcohol is haraam. You're by no means allowed to cut your head open or beat yourself with metal spikes. It's despicable and hypocritical!
