I think people in the US would have learned there is poverty in their own country during the news coverage for Hurricane Katrina, but then again, some people like to continue to hide their head in the proverbial sand. I live in Canada and where I live, I can take people to various neighbourhoods and they will learn what western poverty is like ... if any of them have cell phones at all, it is because they can't afford a landline or their shelter is so unstable, that installing a landline would be pointless. Most of them do not drive. Those that do tend to drive older cars ... in fact, a couple who was one of my clients lived in their car.

I meet people who grossly overestimate the amount of money people receive on welfare and then opine that such people should have their lives strictly monitored by the government in a similar way to the way somebody's life on parole is monitored.
