I know its hard to forget the past, but I was wondering - is it true that the people in Southern states still carry some kind of resentment towards not only african americans (perhaps other races as well)? The amount of racism is definitely not as much as before, however I can't help but think people still carry their prejudices. I know the older generation may be more prejudice than the younger ones - but do the younger ones really carry the same prejudice?
Also, I may be attending a school in the South next fall - Is it hard for Asian Americans to thrive in the South?

Racism, bigotry, and prejudices are everywhere but I know from experience from living all over the USA that the South is still the same. I could go on to tell you so many recent incidents but I am not in the mood to type that much. Today my cousin was telling me about his experience recently of being called a ****** while walking down the road. Also he was telling me about how the white customer's treated him while he was a bagger. Saying things like "bag it right BOY!" The media just don't cover every incident for various reasons. I have noticed my northern community becoming more insensitive to this issue with the continuing migration of southerners to this state. I am seeing the Confederate flag and cowboy hats more often.
Depends on where you go in the South... If you referring to the "backwoods" or other remote areas, then I'm sure as hell about racist people living there.
And yes, it is true. How do I know this? Experience. One of the reasons my parents decided to move to the North.
The younger generation can carry the same prejudice as the other because who do you think taught it to them? -The older generation of course.
I'm not sure about the whole prejudice against Asians. You have to give us more detail about where you are moving.
Please don't let this worry you. There are plenty of people in the South that are not prejudice.
However, if people give you any trouble, let them know right away that you're not going to take any sh*t.
Yes, it's true, some still hang on to that attitude. I think you will find prejudice wherever you go because of skin color or nationality. It's better than it was years ago. I don't think it has much to do with being young or old, but rather the state or geographical location. Old habits are hard to break and coming from a family of prejudice makes it difficult to break free of that mind set. I'm from the South and come from a family without an ounce of prejudice, so it is difficult for me to understand 'why'. I don't care if you are black, brown, red, yellow, green, or blue, you are the same to me.
As far as Asians go we had an influx of Vietnamese after the war and there was skepticism at first. When people began to realize their intelligence and strong work ethic they became rapidly accepted. They now fit in our society with hardly a difference being noticed. I don't think you have a thing to fear by coming down here. Come on down to Texas. We have many great schools. There's a saying by outsiders that live here now: 'I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as quick as I could'.
You will find prejudice EVERYWHERE! Not just whites prejudice of other races but other races hating whites also. It's hard for everyone at some point in their lives. Dealing with things like this and not letting it bother you will only make you a better person. People who treat other people rudely or without respect seem to just try to be the man on top in a way. They want to feel bigger than you by using mean words, etc. Just like bullies in school. It will just make them even more miserable.
So move there, and walk around with your head held high. Have confidence in yourself.
I've got to say that I spent some time in the southern states. Before I went there I had an open mind about the people. I gave them a clean slate because I don't like to believe in stereotypes. But here are some things I observed when I was there:
There seemed to be segregation between Blacks and Whites. I'm lived on the west coast my whole life and there's a different kind of atmosphere down there when it comes to race relations. Keep in mind I grew up during the LA riots and around all the race-based gangs. I'm Asian and I got a lot of stares from people. It wasn't necessarily a 'racist stare' but more of a 'never seen one of those here before' kind of stare. I think as long as you stick to the big cities, you'll be okay.
This is the one of Americas biggest myth ..Southerners (black & white) for the most part have reconciled thier differences and we get along very well with each other..The only hate is the rest of the countries hate for SOUTHERNERS..And thats what I dont understand..They call people with southern values religious zelots, rednecks, ghetto, fat, lazy, racist, and any other thing under the sun..
The South is not the problem...
Ive lived in the west and now the south. The minorities here are more racist than anyone. I never get dirty looks from the old or young white folks but the ol and young black folks always got shyt to say.(my hubby and kids are black)
