I looking to become a surgeon in the future, but what is an example of a type of surgeon with a good salary? What is the average american salary? And how much do doctors with no surgical involvement make annually? I would be looking toward neurology or becoming a neurosurgeon. But I'm open to any other positions, seeing as I don't know what I'm good at quite yet.
Update:What I mean by "I dont know what I'm good at yet" simply means I dont know what field of surgery or medicine I would learn, addapt to, and perform the best. Not that I dont know what I'm generally good at. Anyone knows that. Because I havent gone to medical school yet, I dont know what my strengths are, only what my interests may be. But as I have learned from highschool with my Foreign Language classes and science classes, I figure out something else I'm better at or worse at. It's surprise. Which is why I'm not strictly shooting for nuerosurgery. I know it's a difficult path, but what isnt? Welfare? I know medicine, astronomy, and american sign language interest me. I have back up plans, its just a question for assurance purposes.

$219,770 is the mean surgeon income. $300K would be good.
average US salary in May 2009 was $43,460
Earnings of physicians and surgeons are among the highest of any occupation. According to the Medical Group Management Association's Physician Compensation and Production Survey, median total compensation for physicians varied by their type of practice. In 2008, physicians practicing primary care had total median annual compensation of $186,044, and physicians practicing in medical specialties earned total median annual compensation of $339,738.
Self-employed physicians—those who own or are part owners of their medical practice—generally have higher median incomes than salaried physicians. Earnings vary according to number of years in practice, geographic region, hours worked, skill, personality, and professional reputation. Self-employed physicians and surgeons must provide for their own health insurance and retirement.

If you don't know what you are good at, then why are you planning on being a surgeon? Are you an exceptional student with great grades in math and science? If not, you are unlikely to make it through medical school.
Neurosergery is probably one of the highest paid fields out there, but there are lots of variables.
"What is the average american salary?" Again, there are lots of variables. I believe the average is around $40K right now, but it depends on what you look at. A teacher makes $35 to $40 K in most cases. A mid-level manager probably makes $50 to $75K. It all depends on where you live and where you work!
