I bought a tornado potato at the fair and they just fried the potato plain ...then added whatever you wanted to after it was done. Some of the toppings they used were:
They sprinkled it with salt and added your choice of several toppings:
A powder of different flavorings.. Nacho cheese, bbq sauce, ranch, butter & chives, sour cream.
You could then have them sprinkle it with bacon bits, onion, and I don't remember what else.
I want to make them at home, and I have a cutter, but the deep fryer needs to be as long as the meat skewer. You would need a deep fryer which is at least 12 inches in length.
I am thinking I will figure out how to cook them on the grill next summer.
I have not yet tried, but plan to soon, making the tornado potato in the oven...like you do French fries.....I plan to lightly spray the potato with olive oil then:
Place in a single layer on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees F for 20 minutes. Turn potatoes; bake 10 minutes longer or until golden brown.
If you made these to eat at home you could put ketchup on them, but at the fairs everyone was walking around eating them...the flavored powders were not so messy.
