I've been wanting to get my tragus pierced for a while now. I've seen girls with really cute little diamond studs or rings through it. So last night I got it pierced, but instead of using a small needle like my other ear piercings, the guy pierced it with a thick bar (smaller than, but similar to the belly button ring bars). It looks cute, but I was more interested in wearing thin rings through it. Will it get smaller? Is is always pierced with the thick bar?
I hope this question isn't too confusing!

You can wear a ring in it, just wait until it heals to change it. Its better to have a bar during the healing process anyway. 16 gauge is the standard thickness for that piercing but you could get thicker if you wanted. No it wont get smaller but you wont want it to. If the gauge was any smaller you could end up with cheese cutter effect, which isnt pretty.
The guy who pierced you has done it correctly. Cartilage piercings need to have a bar with a good gauge. You can't just stick a regular earring in a cartilage piercing despite lots of people doing this. It's better to heal with a labret or barbell.
A tragus is usually pierced with a 16g needle, as most cartilage piercings are. I have mine done as well. You certainly can wear a hoop in is, though you may want to keep it at a 16g so it has a less chance of migrating. Wait about 5-8 weeks depending on the health of your piercing and then your able to change it! :) Good luck!
