I live and travel, full time in a motorhome so travel insurance isn't something I need.
My wife & I did travel with a RV caravan to Canada in '05 and did buy travel insurance on that trip. This was before we found out just what is was. We did waste over $400 on that.
Travel insurance, from what I understand, is for if you get sick and cannot continue. There may be other types of travel insurance, but the only type I've ever heard about is the illness type.
Just yesterday, on a Tampa, FL TV station, an investigative reporter was trying to get money returned to a cruise line customer who got sick, was isolated from the other passengers and could not enjoy his trip. He had purchased travel insurance, which would not reimburse him. Since he continued on the trip, in a locked room, he wasn't eligible for a refund.
The above web site is one of the best for consumers to search travel deals. Clark made a fortune in the travel business and now sticks up for you & I. Give him a try.
I have never heard of anyone, who got there money back from travel insurance. That's not saying you can't, I have never heard of it.
Basically travel insurance is an addition to your provincial coverage- so it is supposed to be quite cheap. It covers some of the things your government coverage doesn't include, some prescription drugs, ambulance costs (air ambulance as well).
Plus in some situations you might find claiming under travel insurance easier than dealing with your home coverage. Medical care is the most important aspect of travel insurance. In addition to that, companies also offer things like trip interruption coverage, lost baggage, cancelled flights etc. Those are minor aspects but might come in handy.
One of the companies I'd suggest among Canadian companies- Manulife. They are easy to deal with and one of the biggest Canadian insurers. You can use their calculator to find quotes, just plug in your age.
with everything that's happening nowadays, getting a travel insurance is kind of recommended. well, of course, you won't get your money back if anything happens to you but at least you are given that peace of mind that whatever happens, you will have a fallback.
even for simple long-haul bus travels, i do make use of travel insurance.
