I'd advice you to go to Tanzania but you can come to Kenya.
If you want to avoid visiting malaria areas then South Africa. Being on an Indian Passport you will need a visa for both countries. I am not sure about Swiss passports - you will need to check that. For Tanzania you will also need yellow fever injections (compulsory). I am not sure if your childrens ages, but if they young I would suggest to leave Tanzania until they are a little older.
Traveling with kids in South Africa is easy & there is loads for them to do. December is the peak holiday time, but how busy depends if you going right over Christmas or just before. Depending on how much time I would suggest a few days (4 / 5 nights) in Cape Town then head up the Garden Route (Knysna/Plettenberg Bay) - for about 3 / 4 nights and end off with a safari in the Eastern Cape (malaria free) and some nice child friendly lodges.
Another option if you flying into Johannesburg is to do say 2 nights Sun City (only if you like big resorts) and then 2 / 3 nights in the Madikwe region for malaria free safari and then fly down to Cape Town - perhaps a combination of the city and a night or two in the Winelands.
Hope that this helps and enjoy your holiday!
I've only been to South Africa myself, but know people who has been in Tanzania.
Depending on your children's ages, I would recommend South Africa. South Africa has a more "developed" tourism industry with tours and things to do that might be more suitable for a family vacation.
In December, it's summer in South Africa, so it's warm and nice compared to Switzerland.
I don't think you need to apply for a visa when traveling from Switzerland - you can look it up here: http://www.southafrica.info/travel/documents/visas...
You should visit Kruger National Park, in the north eastern South Africa (easy to get there from Johannesburg by car). There is a lot of lodging in the park, and definitely worth a visit. You can also drive north from there, and visit some of the private game reserves in Greater Kruger if you want some luxury in private lodges. Depending on your children's ages again, because some of the luxury private lodges don't allow children under the age of 12. So look it up before hand.
If you are into fishing or diving, you should visit Sodwana Bay, just south of Swaziland. Not much else to to, than lying around by the beach, fishing or diving. Good chance to see Manta Rays.
You can also do safari in Pilanesberg, vest of Johannesburg. It's much smaller than Kruger, but with different terrain, and a very lovely day trip. I would recommend at least 3 days for Kruger.
Between Kruger and Johannesburgs is the Dragensburg mountains. Amazing nature, some animal rehabilitation centers there.
Then you can fly to Capetown - a lot of lovely nature as well, and greatopportunitiess for boat rides, or trips inland. The east coast should be lovely, but I don't know much about that region, sorry.
But as Mark says, Tanzania is probably cheaper than South Africa.
Yes in the idea that it is a good preventative measure in a region so endemic to yellow fever. Yellow fever has no cure; it is only treated by soothing the symptoms. However, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention does not generally recommend getting your vaccine for just a quick travel. What you really need to worry about is malaria. Some areas in Tanzania are exposed to malaria, so research what exact area you are visiting and consult with your doctor about taking prescriptions or repellents during your visit.
I would suggest South Africa, its such a dynamic city, the landscape, the wildlife, the culture and the people. If your an active family or weather your not, South Africa has something for everyone. From going on safari to relaxing on South Africa's many beaches, you will truly be spoiled for choice.
If you care for the safety of your family, you wont bring them to South Africa.
The people in South Africa rob tourists.
Tanzania is a much better option.
