I'm trying to start a candle making business. I plan on starting out selling at arts and crafts shows. I have a small budget and can only get so many fragrances. My question is should I start out with the usual popular fragrances or go for the more unusual fragrances or a combination?? Any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

it would depend upon why you were making the candles - fun, hobby, small business? The reason that i say that is because if you are trying to make a little extra cash then you need to offer a product that will sell as it meets a wide range of needs - call it the bread and butter part of your business; this would suggest a need for a bit of a market survey to find out what sells best - go to the market, find candle sellers, talk to them (be aware that some might not look favourably upon possible competition); watch what customers buy; ask some what are their favourites and what they buy most (the two aren't always the same). Take some notes as to style of candles, popular fragrances, colours, etc.
Select out a limited range of scents/colours (remember, the idea is to find out how you go with a few candles.) This also gives you a chance to get comfortable and develop your spiel. Remember that there may be a lot of pressure exerted by your first few "performances" and stage fright is not uncommon.
Having a limited range is beneficial for several reasons: easier to remember what stock you have; also you get to ask to potential customer what they would prefer and you can make a note of this in a notebook, and in front of them so that they see you regard what they say as being important; also helps you by not having to rely on memory.
Remember that when you get home and are hopping around and shrieking with pleasure that you have sold some candles that the euphoria tends to erase memory (notebooks help overcome that problem).
Keep your options open so that you may choose to go on OR choose to stop.
By restricting the perfume/colour/style range of candles you choose to make available you also choose to limit the amount of financial exposure you have so that, if necessary, you have enough money to buy a consoling or congratulatory block of chocolate.
One way to figure it out. Purchase a small amount of different scented wax tarts. You can get them on line, eBay or gift/ craft stores.
Make a questionnaire and have people let you know.
Or pick one scent for each season to start.
Or buy several popular scents and use the left over to invent your own.
I think a couple of popular is good...but I have been interested in the newer things that have been coming out....I am always looking for the newer scents....
the unusuall ones... so the crowd
will get to see sumthin new.. just be sure its better than the regular ones
