Reading the synopsis of the opera is raising the question in my head of was there really a woman named Elisabeth that came between King Philip V of Spain and his son and heir Felipe II or did Verdi just make up the love triangle for the dramatic aspect for the opera?

Philip V's 2nd wife was Elizabeth of Parma (Elizabeth Farnese) - she is the real life person behind the woman in the opera, For a full explanation of the confusion surrounding Philip's reign (which was one of the reasons for The War of the Spanish Succession) see the wikipedia article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_V_of_Spain
