At the entry level (depending upon the size of the paper) you will start by getting coffee and running some dumb errands while fact checking and maybe some proofreading and typing (many reporters hand-write on the road). Really, you will do all of the things that are too menial for an actual columnist. This is a great foot in the door, though and you should just wait for your chance when you are trusted to make modifications to columns and someday write your own. Have a fantastic day. Joey

If he/she can write, probably a lot of boring assignments, like the Good News of the Day, or the Current Events in Your Neighborhood columns, the quirky bits, the retirement of Joe Blow at the Korner Kleaners who have been open for the past 28 years without fail - that kind of thing.

It varies per paper. I was able to writer stories, do some basic stuff (obits and stuff like that) I also checked facts for other reporters. If your really iterested...see if you r local area as a newspapers Association (for instance I live in DC we hgave teh MDDC press assocaion.) they may be able to help you get a internship.

it depends on what the newspaper needs. expect to do all the flunky jobs that nobody else wants, just like in any job anywhere. do well, and you can get better work and better pay, just like in other jobs.
