It depends on the time of release.
LP released when Nu-Metal was the big thing.
It also depends on the quality of songs.
LPs' have always been either the same, or slightly better. Hybrid Theory<Meteora, Mintues To Midnight<A Thousand Suns
They have a dedicated and loyal fanbase, and they take great pains to keep it loyal.
They always care for their fans(for no better way to put it), and let people feel their lives and histories.
Their songs are relate able. We understand what they are going through.
They stay fresh, by changing their sound every album. Instead of bands like Nickelback, who just release the same album with a different cover over and over again. Not that it's a bad album. :P
They are talented. That's important. They are real people, with real feelings etc. They don't go overboard with the Rockstar Persona or anything.
Check out Mike Schinoda's blog, and you can see, what a honest, down-to-earth and frankly amazing guy he is.
Btw to get yours popular;
1. Use sites like Reverbnation-Promote it.
2. Play as many gigs as you can.
3. Be Unique. This is important, ok. There are way too many LP copies on the loose. (My band was one, until we all collectively decided to change our music, after getting a new Bassist and Drummer.)
4. Mass E-mail people.
5. LP used to go to Online Chat room, and send the music to anyone who asked. Do that too.
6. Viral Marketing. 'Nuff said.
7. Btw if you ever make a demo, send it to Phantom City Studios, they are pretty good, apparently but you gotta pay.
8. Make sure your demo, is really creative. Listen to LPs' demo. Look for the song 'She Couldn't'
It's has a short slow keyboard solo, and a bollywood-esque beat.
9. Tell all your friends and tell them to tell all their friends.
10. Send an e-mail to [email protected] if you have any more questions. I too have a band and we are making a demo.
We are pretty much influenced by Ac/Dc, Avenged Sevenfold, Breaking Benjamin, Green Day, Guns N' Roses, Iron Maiden, Linkin Park
Honestly, until I started doing Yahoo answers about a month ago it had been at least 10 years since I heard the name "Linkin Park". I had assumed they'd fallen off the map, but Yahoo answers is actually a good place to get a general idea of what the general public of 15-20 year olds are listening to. That being said, just stop Linkin park is the worst band that ever existed, they make Nickelback look good.
Because In the End, Somewhere I Belong, Numb, Breaking the Habit, What Ive Done and New Divide were Linkin Park's biggest songs.
Well, the first time I ever heard of Linkin Park, I was at my local Record Exchange (Ohio) back in '99 checking out the free table, which was usually for promoting local bands. My sister and I found a 2 song cassette demo of this band called Linkin Park that we thought looked interesting, so we thought we'd check them out and we fell in love with them. About a year later, my sister started freaking out one day, "Linkin Park are on the radio!" And I've followed them ever since. People can say whatever they want about LP, but I think for a band to go from having to GIVE their music away to being one of the biggest bands in the world is impressive.
Anyway, they were initially turned down by a lot of labels (I bet they're all kicking themselves now), so they promoted themselves online and gained supporters who formed an unofficial street team and helped get their music out there. Finally, it got to the right people, they got signed, and Hybrid Theory became the highest selling CD of 2000, thanks, in part, to all of the exposure that they've gotten in the process of trying to get signed. So the best advice for you would be to do a lot of self-promotion. If you get a band together, try to book as many shows as you can to get local exposure, put your music on MySpace or YouTube, make a promotional demo and try to get it to any record store or radio station that's interested . Hell, Marilyn Manson used to stand on a corner and pass out hand drawn fliers to promote his shows. Do whatever you have to to try to get followings both locally and online. If you already have a following, you'd be more likely to get a record deal and may sell more albums than you would if you were starting out completely unknown because you'd already have people who know who you are and that they like your music. You have to start on the bottom and work your way up.
Anyhow, I do believe that a lot of their success is based on sheer talent too, though. Chester is one of the best vocalists of our time and a lot of people can relate to their songs. But, like you said, many other bands are equally talented, so I'm sure that all of the exposure that they've gotten along the way played a huge part in their success and I see no reason why it couldn't do the same for you.
They had a new sound, they weren't the first Nu-Metal band, but they were among the first to have an actual rapper in the band. There were bands like Limp Bizkit that rapped, but I think it was the idea of having a rapper AND a singer that people thought was cool.
Im not saying you should get a rapper in your band, thats not my point. Im saying, people in the last decade have been obsessed with new Ideas (Nu-Metal, Dubstep, PSY, etc..)
Just make sure your new idea is worth listening to.
@ Awesome Gan: He said he wanted to be as popular, that doesn't neccecarilly mean he wants to emulate their style or sound. He wants to know what to do to make his band big.
Talent and hard work, look at their early I mean before Hybrid Theory. Really 2 different guys left the band because they thought it wasn't going anywhere.
After Hybrid Theory though, they had excellent marketing. The songs are deep and can be related too. It also carries a wide market appeal.
They are a great band. Their music has good meaning, and they are all very nice, do a lot of charity. They make music for fans and don't stop writing. They all work together. They don't let other people get in their way.
I don't understand why some people hate them, I think they are the best band ever, they are my role models
One Linkin Park is enough for the world so don't you ever think of starting a band okay?
ADD:
Linkin Park got famous cause their lyrics are whiny teen angst sh¡t.
It's basically pop-metal. Which isn't a dis, it's smart. The songs are formulaic. The parts are very simple but they all complement each other and make for a huge sound. It's very vocal-oriented. This is all the basic essence of pop.
Linkin Park is basically One Direction with distortion pedals and feedback, and more angsty vocals.
The frontman Chester Bennington..and The ironic rapper Mike Shinoda together made them so popular..!!
Cause their songs demand love and respect!
