" Bomb " sinkers are also known as Bank weights. I don't know why they call them "bomb" sinkers ( yes I do but it's just a disturbing thought) but we call them bank weights because they resemble the old fashioned bank bags from back in the day. Regardless of what they're called, they help to hold your bait to the bottom without snagging as much and helps to keep your your rig secure to the bottom without rolling in current. They're also used for light trolling and break away rigs. There's a a bunch of ways to use these weights. Look up some rigs and you can actually alternate the weight to use a "bomb"/ bank weight. ~good luck catchin'
Not absolute on this one but, believe their used for saltwater/ocean fishing to allow the bait ta' roll around the bottom when attached to a special leader for both boat and offshore fishing<);-3

Primarily to aid long casting owing to their aerodynamic shape.
