I bought a laser for my cats, and my Chihuahua is crazy for it! She runs and runs, chasing it right along with the cats, and she knows when I get it out and stands there, waiting for me to click it on. I have heard that they can cause OCD behavior, but I have not observed this,as she is fine as soon as I put it away. I figure that it's an easy way to exercise her when it is too cold for her outside.
Does anyone else here have a dog that loves to chase them, and do you think it is harmful?
Update:Corgi Girl - That is exactly what Dori does! She is so crazy!
Update 3:Oh! She does love flashlights, too!

Yes, my Dal Domino is laser crazy.
I too have heard it can cause OCD-like behaviour, so I don't bring it out all too often. But as soon as he sees that red dot, he tears after it at 100miles an hour. I'll admit I love watching him chase it and have a whale of a time.
I mostly use it when the weather is horrible out as a form of exercise.
My 2 yr old boxer LOVES the laser. As soon as she sees me take it out of my purse her eyes go straight to the floor! lol.
Laser pointers are not good for dogs who continue to look for the light long after it's gone. My friend's lab is like this... he is SO obsessed with the little red dot that he searches for it for hours after it's disappeared, and it's hard to distract him from searching when he gets like that. My friend has even tried showing him where the light comes from... it didn't help. He still goes mad =/ THAT'S how dogs can develop OCD behavior from the laser! Fortunately my dog knows where the light is coming from, she knows that I control it, and she doesn't frantically search for the light once it turns off. I see no problem with continuing this game with her. Some dogs just can't handle it though.
Yes, my mom's dog Blade goes absolutely bonkers if you say "flashlight".
He could chase that light for hours nonstop, lol.
I tried the laser with my dog Chaos, I was like "Chaos get the light, get it boy!"
And he just looked at me like I lost my mind. But he absolutely loves chasing bubbles.
I don't think it is harmful, it's all in fun. He loves chasing the light, but he's not obssessed with it. We also will do it during the winter. We live in WI so it gets freezing here.
Me, Me, Me
My Akita, Nikki will chance the laser as long as I do it, he is the same way with a flashlight, he never gets tired.
My other dogs could care less about it all...but not him...he is an energizer bunny when it comes out, I got one just for him, since he loved the flash light so much.
My cat loves it! I don't think it's harmful, unless they hurt themselves running for it, or you shine it in their eyes (which is really bad. Try to avoid that.) I don't see how it could cause OCD, or even how animals can get OCD. As long as you don't shine it at the bottom of a cliff, or into their eyes, or something, I think it's fine, and a great way to get them to exercise.
My dog loves it too.. if you say "red dot" he scrambles around looking for it.
It "can" cause OCD, but not always. It depends on the individual dog. If your dog starts obessing about chasing lights or shadows, I would discontinue using it and find another activity for your dog to do.
As long as you dont shine it in her eyes, no I dont think its harmful.
My own doesn't...but when I was younger my friend had a chocolate labrador who was CRAZY for lasers. My friend and I would actually point laser on her younger brother's back and have Mandy (the dog) chase him all through house...what meanies we were lol.
hahaha My dogs do too. they love that lazer, the cat takes it out of the drawer to play with it. if you ignore him he takes you the lazer and just starts to meow like crazy untill you pay attention. My dogs and cat have gone to even nipping at my elbow to catch my attention to attack that damn light. hahaha no it's not harmful if you have it pointing on the ground or any type of surface. it's good excerise for them, pointing it at there eyes however can cause damage, but you would have to have it constaintly directed at the eyes for periods at a time to show any type of damage, but i suggest just don't point it at there eyes to avoid harm...
My canines does this too! it somewhat is taken into consideration one of my admired the thank you to tucker him out slightly till now our walk time! i think of it somewhat is because of the fact my canines likes to fetch plenty...the laser pointer is just one thing he can play fetch with that strikes sooo plenty quicker!
Yep! My dogs LOVE chasing it around and have their own places in the house they cover. It's pretty funny!
I have noticed no issues with my dogs with it.
