For those Gringos or any other Race out there... I have this to say about PR: "Island Life"!
Those who have lived on this island, all can admit- every year that passes- Life here gets harder...but still, there is something that draws us back. Those Boricuas that migrate,...always hold a close place in their hearts for it. I guess because it is Home. PR can be better off, if only we would as a People fight for it. We as a people are passionate for everything, even for "Government and Politics"...which never did any good for the bulk of the common people.
But "Freedom" is felt in Puerto Rico more than any where else in this world. "Yes" I must agree in a sense with another who answered...Poverty and Crime does unfortunately exist on the Island. But I truly believe that this island is "Blessed" by the Lord.
Such beauty! When the people are busy surviving...the island looks dark...but when the people are "Off" on vacation..."Gosh" you should see how this island comes alive!!!
Puerto Rico is an adquiered taste...unless you spend time to live it...you'll never know it!
To the person who answered that Puerto Rico is a crime-infested ghetto and children are begging for money, I KNOW you must have gotten confused with another country. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and I have NEVER in my 23 years of life seen a child asking for money on the streets and anywhere else, you know why? It's against the law for an underage child to work, solicit money, etc. And I imagine you live in a crime-free bubble because our crime rate is no different that any state in the USA. FYI
I HAVE BEEN VACATIONING IN PUERTO RICO CONSECUTIVELY FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS.MANY PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT THAT THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO EXPERIENCE THAN JUST SAN JUAN! EVEN THOUGH PUERTO RICO IS A RELATIVELY SMALL ISLAND OVERALL PUERTO RICO OFFERS THE MOST VAST EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES THAN ANY OTHER CARIBBEAN ISLAND. THE WEST SIDE OF THE ISLAND IN THE RINCON / ISABELA AREA IS GORGEOUS! WITH MILES MILES OF BEAUTIFUL BEACHES. THE SNORKELING AND DIVING HERE IS AWESOME NOT TO MENTION THE SURFING, IN THE NEAR-BY TOWN OF MAYAGUEZ HAS A WONDERFUL ZOO THAT HOUSES BOTH A FREE-FLYING BUTTERFLY EXHIBIT AND A FREE-FLYING PARROT EXHIBIT.. THE EAST SIDE IN FAJARDO AREA HAS THE EL YUNQUE RAIN FOREST, MANY SAILING /SNORKELING ADVENTURES. LET'S NOT FORGET THE SISTER ISLAND OF VIEQUES AND CULEBRA..ABSOLUTELY ENCHANTING.CULEBRA HOSTS THE STUNNING FLAMENCO BEACH, WHICH IS RANKED 4TH IN THE WORLD. THERE IS THE CHARMING TOWN OF OLD SAN JUAN WITH IT'S CATHEDRAL AND FORTS.PUERTO RICO IS ALSO HOME TO3 OF THE WORLD'S 5 BIO-BAYS I COULD GO ON AND ON. YOU COULD SPEND 2 WEEKS THERE AND STILL NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO SEE AND DO ALL PUERTO RICO HAS TO OFFER. ALL SHOULD VISIT...OFTEN.
Above all I love the fact that it is not a country where you need to stick to the capital or beaches to find an adventure. Yes just like in most countries you will find poverty but the people have pride and honor and just like in most countries there is crime but hey isn't crime all over the world by now. Our history is rich with all kinds of wonderful happenings hey we even got ourselves famous and infamous ghosts and creatures like the cupacabra not to forget our infamous pirate Cofresi. To sum it all up Yes I love my Puerto Rico "Isla del encanto" because it is an exciting world within such a small island.
My wife loves Puerto Rico because she is from Bayamon. She returns every few months to visit... it is a beautiful island, and remarkably packed with so many things to see, very pretty mountains and vegetation, too. The people are nice and very understanding as I am trying to learn Spanish. I am a gringo, but I have come to love Puerto Rico, too.
I loved Puerto Rico when I went. El Yunque was gorgeous, the people were so friendly, and the food was delicious. And if you are 21+, go to the Bacardi Factory tour, it's really interesting!
I love my PRECIOSA BORINQUEN because it has a lot to offer. It has history, exquisite cuisine, lovely mixed culture among Spaniards, Native Indians, and Africans. There is a wide variety of eye color, skin color, hair texture, and we all love each other the way we are. We are warm people, people who help each other, people who salute warmly every time we meet, people who smiles at you without knowing you. You don't find that everywhere! Besides our unique charisma, our isla del encanto has stunning beaches, the only rain-forest part of the United States National Parks System, the biggest underground river part of a Cave Park, a radio telescope only in its kind in the world(from movie Contact), Old San Juan is so rich of history that it is enchanting. PR is fabulous, you would be a fool not loving it.
I LOVE PUERTO RICO because El Yunque is so beautiful!!! And I love the beaches there!!! I wish I could go back again really soon.. when there are no hurricanes... :)
Can't stand Puerto Rico. Unless you are right on the coast or in the rain forest mountains, the whole country is a crime infested ghetto. Its filthy dirty, there are stray, violent dogs EVERYWHERE, children begging for money from tourists and poverty as far as the eye can see.
