Oscar was better. If you could take ten common opponents and put each against them, chances are, Oscar would fare better. He is more versatile. Marquez is gritty and rugged and he's a better defensive fighter than often given credit for. In fact, I think Marquez' defense is better than Oscar's. However, Oscar has better offensive weapons.
.
Both are roughly the same size, slight edge to Oscar, being taller. But both fought their best at or near the 140 lb. range. Oscar carried 147 better, obviously, but he has a much better jab and jab/right combination. He also throws better combinations.
.
Oscar de la Hoya could have been even better if he didn't worry so much about his image. That took care of itself. Girls loved him so there is little that needed to be done there. If you look at his six losses, all of them could have been reversed with a few changes. Hopkins is the only one who would have beaten Oscar with as many changes as possible.
.
I'm no huge fan of Oscar the person, as he tends to play favorites and constantly contradicts himself. But I have to give credit to Oscar the fighter.
.
Here are some possible changes to his losses. It's not to say that Oscar would have won these fights but there are just some changes he could have made to improve his chances.
.
Mayweather: Oscar should have used the jab more in the later part of the fight. Floyd got under Oscar's skin and Oscar tried too hard to "punish" Floyd for the haters rather than fight HIS fight......
.
Pacquiao: This was already too late for Oscar. But coming in at 145 certainly didn't help his chances. It didn't make him any faster, as he'd hoped for. He didn't always make the best decisions going into or during a fight.
.
Shane Mosley 1 & 2: I thought Oscar won the second fight. The changes should have been made before the first bell. Mosley wouldn't have come in juiced. In the first fight, I think Oscar got caught up in the foolish assessment of some that he didn't do well against Black fighters. Again, it's Totally Stupid and Oscar should have just ignored those fools. He was more interested in "out-speeding and out-fighting" Mosley, who wasn't the brightest decision maker himself. Oscar's frame of mind cost him this fight.
.
Trinidad: Tito's Mother knows he got hisAss handed to him. Oscar simply got Robbed.
.
Hopkins: There is nothing Oscar could have done to change this, except maybe to go the distance and lose. Small chance there. Arrogance and a sense of adventure took him to 160. That and the fact that he partied himself out of his prime.

Still, Oscar is better than Marquez.
If they are to fight now I would still go with Oscar. Prime for prime Oscar would walk through Marquez.
Marquez is a bloated welterweight while the taller and bigger Oscar was a legit MW.
Marquez by far . La Hoya had it when he was younger but just for a bit
Juan manuel marquez much better
I have more respect for Marquez. He's more of a man than Oscar. But I think Oscar would beat him if they fought.
Marquez.
Technically, Marquez. Now in terms of natural talent and physical abilities (speed, power and strength), it's Oscar.
