I have a shot at getting a scholarship to going to Egypt this summer and learning Arabic. Not only will this knock out my language requirement at school and get some extra credits towards school, but it'll be an awesome experience. But of course my parents are completely against and talk to me like I'm some sore of retard with retard ideas. The fact is that this will be AN ALL EXPENSE PAID trip for the entire summer if I get selected. Like its not like I'm going to Germany or Amsterdam or something I'm going to a Muslim country. Why are our parents like this? Anything that is slightly out of the mainstream (which pretty much includes anything that doesnt have to do with being an engineer or a doctor) is so horribly frowned upon like i suggested killing someone. I'm really sick of this ****. And they always bring up the im going to hell if i dont listen to em so I mean what the hell am i supposed to do? And dont try the whole talk it out with them crap, I've been doing that since middle school. Even if I volunteer for some good cause theyll ask me a 100 diff questions and ask why do it if I can spend that time studying? Yea, Dad thats all this world's about, studying and making money.
Update:I meant no disrespect to Germany or Amsterdam, Im just coming from the attitude like oh its crazy over there girls, beer, and all that. The stereotypical attitude my parents would prolly hav to places like that. I would LOVE to visit both haha

You are still very young and your parents love you and are concerned. It is a big world out there. And what is wrong with Germany or Amsterdam? You are obviously not very informed about current cultures. There are many Muslims living in these countries worshiping in local mosques. Study Arabic anyway, it might come in handy in the future and you get your extra credit. Sorry, I know you did not want to hear this. p.s. I realized afterwards what you meant. Hah, yeah, just gotta deal with it. Talking is about the only thing you can do. Like all through highschool with me, they wanted me to study and wouldn't let me go out...not even once. But there is almost nothing to study. Senior year, teachers give you barely any work, but in my parents country, that was their toughest year....
I'm surprised about the engineering thing......my parents only wanted me to be a doctor......i ended up being an engineer and still to this day....my dad can't understand it.
They grew up in a different world and nothing you can ever do will convince them that there is another way to think.
Well am not a paki but i knw all parents can be like that... my mom is sometimes like that. For example i asked her if i could go to Europe for this summer program where i will get credits toward skool and that they will pay everything... the answer i got was a NO but hey i tried to be extra innocent and talked her out of it now am free cuz she trusts me and she knws that am doing it for a good cause!!!

You may not have to worry about this as Pakistan is about to explode into Pashto/Afghan/Kirgistan war. The place will be a mess for years. Go to Egypt for some peace and quiet. Only occasional bombings once in a while.

well, try telling them, and getting some elder/ school teacher/ someone they trust to tell them how good/ prestigious the offer is and how awesome it would be for you, and how safe egypt is etc :D maybe then they would be more assured. as in, get them to "advertise" :D
and i dont thnk it would be very different if you went to germany / amsterdam... they just dont want you leaving home :D
LOL sooo true...haha...just remember that they are only that way because they care about you and want the best for you and want you to have a better life than they did...they probably don't want you in another country cuz its far away from them...i'm sure you can convince them. they just thinkk that they are better qualified to tell you whats best for you than you are ^^ work on them if they know how much you want it i'm sure they'll let up.
