Why didn't he do so good after elementary school?
Why was this boy an honor student in elementary school, but in high school he doesn't do so well and he skips some of his classes?
I think he started drinking alcohol when he was in high school

He had some melancholy event happen, like a break-up that he did not handle well. Now, I am pretty sure he is with "the wrong crowd" that reinforces behavior of giving up on success. If he starts befriending ambitious students, or better yet has a crush on one, he will definitely get back on track to self-improvement. Please encourage him to tale my advice.
