Legos have become a household name. They are so famous and popular they can sell their stuff for whatever price they want because their products are top-of-the-line and the best building blocks. I'm with you that they are way too expensive, but I think they're worth it.
I'm not sure why Iron Man is so expensive. Typically only the Legos that aren't sold anymore are so expensive. Hope this helps a bit
Several factors, first "brand" name. They have a unique style and where the only and first for along time. Quality of the bricks. Some people say they are better than Megablocks. Most of it is marketing to parents and children, they have a strong infrastructure on who buys and model sets they produce.
In the article, "clutch power," i.e., the ability of its bricks to snap together tightly while also being easy to separate, thereby readily allowing for de- and reconstruction.
But mostly is just hype and the fact that licensing for Marvel and Lego means they can charge a higher price because its Marvel, the fact their the only ones who can say Lego make this and then charge high prices because we can. High margin means profit leading to greed. Demand is high so they can have semi monopoly, kinda like Sony in electronics. People think Sony is the greatest.

Because people pay it. If everyone stops paying for ridiculous amounts then businesses will have no option than to sell cheaper; silly and demand.
