Do they not realize(or is it just denial) that there are homosexuals who also happen to be racist? Why is it when a gay does not devote his life to the "gay rights" movement, they say he's a "self hater"?

Just as their can be minorities that are homophobic. Neither discrimination is more or less severe than the other. Both have caused torture, death and restriction of rights.
Because they honestly don't see the differences. They see it as a hatred towards a community or group of people and it's that simple to them. You're right, some gay people can be quite racist and I honestly don't understand that given I would have thought there would be some understanding about that kind of hatred.
I've never heard anyone described as a "self hater", though. I suspect that's by people wanting to put the gay community down rather than it coming from within the actual community.
Your first question assumes that people believe that homophobia and racism are the exact same thing, as in the same exact beliefs and concepts. When people compare homophobia to racism they aren't saying that. No one is saying that if you are gay you can't be racist or that if you are black you can't be homophobic. The comparison is about their relative rights movements, the widespread and socially acceptable hatred that both people had/have to endure, as well as the 'think of the children' and 'its what god wants' mentality that was used to justify both racism and homophobia.
There is not a gay person alive who is not a radical who says that every gay person has to 'devote his life to the gay rights movement'. What most gays do say however is to not be ashamed of being gay and be proud of who are you.
of course there are racist gay people, just like there are people against racism who are homophobic, and gay people who don't like transsexual people, and people who don't like being race-stereotyped themselves who do it to other races - almost No one is exempt from being illogical.
however the situation is very much the same, since there's nothing inherently wrong with being any race, and race is something inborn, and people hate people of certain races for no logical or objective reason at all.
as for being self-hating if not obsessed with rights, i do think some people go a bit overboard regarding pointing fingers about that. i'm extremely out and very, very supportive/open-minded, and I'VE been considered a bit self-hating, unsympathetic and things like that for thinking there are far bigger issues to worry about right now than who gets what marriage rights. i can't even get married where i am now, and it definitely does suck, but i think people who consider that the Biggest problem right now are a bit biased.
but, there Are some people who Are a bit self-hating and show it through their lack of support for their own rights. they might be "fine" being gay, but might be against gay marriage because marriage that isn't between a man and a woman is unnatural or something like that, which is obviously a bit of a conflict in beliefs, and would likely indicate that person thinks less of themselves than they would had they been born straight.
Of course there are a few homosexuals that are also racist. But there are also a lot of black folks who are anti-gay because they still persist in believing it's a choice for some reason, thinking that it somehow justifies their oppression of gay and trans folk. Whether or not homosexuality is a choice is completely irrelevant anyway. Nobody deserves prejudice and discrimination. You'd think that a minority group who has endured a long history of discrimination and oppression would know better than to inflict that discrimination and oppression against other minority groups. It's hypocrisy at its worst.
Homosexualities
via fact maximum racists and homophobes frequently are Bush supporters who in no way held Bush in charge for something he ever did! Like compromising national risk-free practices by ability of ignoring terrorism till 9/11/2001! bear in techniques it replace into Clinton's fault W disregarded terrorism!
Racism is hatred or discrimination based on race or sex (and not sexuality). So they are wrong. Homophobia is a kind of discrimination not a kind of racism.
SONG CUE: Everyone's a little bit racist.
