from Down Under. It has now been one year (12 months) since gun

owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal

firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing

Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

The first year results are now available:

-Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent;

-Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;

-Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent);

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up

300 percent as compared with the last one year period when private

ownership of a firearm was legal.

(NB: the law-abiding citizens did turn in their personal firearms,

the criminal element did not and thus criminals in Australia still

possess their guns.)

-While data for the 25 years preceding the confiscation of privately

owned guns showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms,

There are almost as many guns as there are people in the U.S. I think there should be limited gun control in this country to prevent things like the Virginia Tech shootings (and so does the NRA!). If you think rifles are going to stop an invasion you are nuts - an M16 up against armed helicopter gunships, fighter planes, bombers and missiles is a feather against a rapidly moving boulder - which one do you think will win?

The fact is that every country that has outlawed guns has a lower crime rate than the US. This includes Australia, Canada, the UK, Japan, etc.

And your theory about invasions is equally bogus. If someone wanted to invade the US, they'd do it from the sky by dropping bombs, not by sending in troops with rifles like they might have done 50 yearsago. Armed civilians would not be a problem.

The US has the highest crime rate in the industrialized world, and the NRA is bent on keeping it that way. More crime = more gun sales = more $$$.

Liberal pressure for gun control is greatly exagerrated. Granted, twenty years ago, I think you would have had a valid point. Many liberals ARE gun owners. Gun and ammunition sales in the northern states is skyrocketing. Conservatives were right in their defense of maintaining personal weapons and I think that many of those who WERE advocates of gun control have found middle ground. Liberal politicians are afraid of this issue and want no part of it.

I don't know but I'm a conservative and I'm all for gun control. If you can't control your gun well enough to hit the target the first time you shoot, you need to learn more about gun control. I shoot well enough that I can hit my target EVERY time in the kill zone. Double taps are even better. That's my idea of gun control.
