Typically (there are exceptions to the rule) men usually bond by doing things together whereas women bond by sharing things together. For example men will remember: fishing trips, vacations, games, etc. whereas women will remember conversations, etc.
Sports i think is a way for guys to bond- and in general most guys are competitive and like the challenge of besting a worthy adversary.
In general i think people tend to like things they are very good at- and for guys the more that we master a sport- i think the more that we enjoy playing it at a high level - and having competition that stretches us. It's like our biggest rival- can also be someone that we respect tremendously and you have epic battles (be it on a basketball court, etc.)
I remember seeing something about this on the Discovery Channel I believe. One of the theories thrown around was that men's obsession with sports can be traced back to the nature of the cavemen. The men in those ancient times were tasked with hunting and warefare. When you look at sports, they are like simulated warfare, or they involve skills useful in warfare or hunting. Like the javelin throw is a pretty obvious one, where you are simulating throwing a spear, as you would do in warefare or hunting. Team sports are like simulated warefare, not where people are actually fighting, but the man's nature is to align with their "tribe", which in modern times is their "team". This was all just a theory, though.
It's in our nature to be competitive. Men love the challenge of beating other men in something competetive. Basketball, Baseball, Football hockey, etc. were all made up by men for men to play and watch.
I've read it's a tribal thing. We can't go around in bands fighting the other band of men anymore. So we dress up in colorful costumes/armor take our weapons like ball bats with us and go fight the other team. Or some fat guys do this through watching pro sports. I like playing sports but watching them to me is so boring.
i like the:under dog storeys, teams wining championships, athletes winning trophyes, players working all day and night to be great, and i love it when somone just does something amazing. like michael jordan or michael phelps

Competiton
It's in our nature to be competitive. Men love the challenge of beating other men in something competetive. Basketball, Baseball, Football hockey, etc. were all made up by men for men to play and watch.
Competition. Intensity. Men love showing off. I do!
sports soothes men's basic primal instinct for hunting. in short, men would rather shoot an arrow or hunting rifle, but basketball is an alternative.

It gives them something to focus on other than their stressful lives.
Men have sports, women have whatever the hell women like to do.
Because of the excitement, intensity, and competition. I actually know quite a few girls who also love sports.
