Sometimes, it's fun and funny..... until you're dying from it all. 

Once you lose someone who drank way too much for way too long... it's not so fun or funny anymore.

It starts off as fun; you're right. However, it's chronic and progresses to--let's just say--really, really horrible, unimaginable stuff. I've seen it. To answer your question, my guess is the negative view stems from witnessing the later stages of the disease.
