First option: We (puertorricans) have europeans in our family trees, (also some families have americans among their ancestors sionce 1898), so many of us have caucasian genes in our mix. Some puertorricans have a higher % of caucasicans genes than others.

Puertorricans come from three major groups:

A. Native americans: Taino / Arawaks that were the habitants of Puerto Rico when Christopher Columbus "discovered" the island back in 1493. These tainos were enslaved by Spain during the colonization period that started in 1503.

B. Europeans (mostly from Spain, but also from other countries/places including Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Corcega, and others). Puerto Rico was colonized by Spain. The european settlers got mixed with the tainos before they were exterminated. From these relationships mestizos (half europeans - half tainos) were born. Later, inmigrants from other parts of Europe also traveled to PR.

C. Africans: The europeans brought in africans as slaves to replace the tainos who died in revolts and due to different illness. The european settlers got mixed with the africans and mulatos (half europeans - half africans) were born.

Later, the european settlers, mestizos, mulatos, and africans continued marrying each other and from this whole mix the puertorricans were formed. Some puertorricans look very "caucasican", others looks very african / dark skinned, but most are in the middle of both in all shades of brown.

Last thing, Puerto Rico was invaded by USA during the hispanoamerican war of 1898, so since that year you can add americans to our mix (with all the mix americans have already).

There are americans and other caucasicans that live in Puerto Rico, they are residents here, not tourists. For example, the president of the company I work for is from Sweden.

Because a lot of us carry the caucasian gene, as to the word 'american ' to say that because some live on the island , meaning they are caucasian.. sorry. the word 'american ' goes to the whole new world, and not only are the caucasians in the United States, there is big black population there also, mixing very much with the gringos, the children look Hispanic.. but Puerto Ricans we have our roots planted firmly since 1526, here is list of that time period. white males married to white females--57 %with the Natives females 14%single white males 298 ..fre Natives 474 slave Natives675.. African slaves, males1,168,,African females slaves355, so add this up.. Has nothing to do with the 'americans' coming in in 1898, after all not all 'americans' in the U.S are caucasians, you have a pretty big mix there, white, black mostly .. so why dint you just go to Santo Domingo? Maybe your question would be different.. Cuba, puerto rico, Hispaniola , we are the beautifully mix of the caribbean .. a mix of rainbow, sand, ocean, and the blessings of God!

Long story short: 3 races Spanish, Tainos(natives) and Africans. During the hundreds years of colonization by the spanish empire the 3 races mixed. That's why it's possible to find in PR people with caramel skin, european faces and straight hair. The same way you could also find white people with bad hair and big noses and lips.

Some do because of Spanish descent others look more Afro and mixed.

Many Hispanic people are of different colors. some are as black and some are as white.

I don't know but what I can tell you is that they are ghetto and speak Spanish horrible ghetto Spanish.
