Why/How can consciousness end?

I'm surprised that atheists argue that when we die we have to part in life ever again.

I can't see how consciousness, which is all we are given as sentient beings can simply end.

Once we die wouldn't that mean that everything else no longer existed as well, since our only perspective is a personal one?

Is there any real concrete proof either way?

Update:

Consciousness in terms of out very existence, the existence of everything and our perception of them.

Update 3:

Melvin, a lamp is not comparable to universal awareness.

I'm not religious to any degree and by my own observation I have been brought to regard reincarnation as a viable possibility.

Now please, I'm asking you to evaluate my belief on these grounds.

Concrete grounds
