I don't want to step on any toes here but the US Government has a lot to do with that,it actually cost less to process diesel than it does to process gasoline.I watched a special on the History channel about the making of gas and diesel, the process of filtering oil to make gasoline requires more filtering and therefore takes longer to produce. The process of producing diesel doesn't filter out all of the oil from the product and therefore takes less time.To find out why for sure would require you to contact your Senator or Congressman and I grant you they will not tell you the truth.
Diesel fuel has a higher energy content than Gasoline, meaning you can get more power from the gallon of Diesel than gas. It's more expensive to make too.
On average the tax on diesel is 50.8 cents per gallon in the US (state+federal). The tax on gas on average is 46 cents per gallon. The taxes go directly into funds for road and transportation improvement.
edit: BTW Rick Canada pays $1.13/gal and GB pays $1.90/gal in taxes so we don't have it so bad in the states...
diesel is more expensive because its 1 better for the environment and 2 it lasts longer why are most cars swapping to diesel because its easier to process diesel and the cars will last longer on a tank of fuel
Diesel is more expensive because mileage is better and used in more applications, like trucks & trains. Demand = price. even though it's way cheaper to produce. So like with most things you're getting screwed.
it depends where you fill up.ie which country. If you are in Dubai it will be far cheaper than in most other countries. So if you find diesel costly in your country, stay in Dubai where diesel is cheap but rental accommodation and housing is costly.Your choice.HA HA!!

Available refining capacity + supply and demand = retail price
its the process of making it
