I would assume that it's a software problem such as in settings.
There are power settings that can be changed when in the screen saver area. It's called power saver or something like that. If changing settings there don't help then it's possible some windows xp files are damaged. You could try a restore to when it worked.

Have you tried to manually press the power button on your machine?
