It needs to grow a whole lot more. The WPS is about to be gone, they just don't have enough funding. It's sad, it really is, there are so many talented young ladies out here that might not have a big chance at playing professional soccer in the future.
In my area (southeast USA) it has grown by leaps and bounds since I was a kid. I believe in my lifetime it will be bigger than Hockey and rival basketball and baseball as far as coverage and attendance. American football will reign for at least another 50-70 years but soccer will become a huge sport in America. (just look at the Sounders) Womens football will be a novelty at best, it may have a following and their are other leagues popping up around the world but if the WPS fails here then their is little hope for a professional women's game in other parts of the world.
it wont grow far enough. the world cup is the only televised event for the women, at least the men have the mls which is growing but not fast enough. until the women have their own real league and worldwide as well they start playing more than national teams it will stay the way it is, i guess they can have world cups every 2 years since thats the only real playing time they get.

You must be referring to growth in the USA, because Association Football is already the most popular sport on the planet.
Won't go far until they actually change the name of the sport to "football".
