My Dakota has about 195,000 on the odometer, and whenever it is put into 4 wheel drive, either high or low, it makes a very loud clunking noise. I've had it looked at, and it is definitely the transfer case. Sometimes in 4L, it doesn't even move, as if it is in neutral. I was told the whole case needed to be replaced, but I have read online that only the chain need be replaced. I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on the subject, if I can do it myself, what parts to buy, websites on how to do it, etc. Cost is definitely a consideration, so the cheapest option would be the best. I don't want to completely replace it, just make 4WD functional again. Thanks in advance

cost wise your better off buying a used one for it ,by the time you get in to that one your going to have more than the 250 bucks a good used one is going to cost,if you get a low mileage used one it will probably out last the truck, rebuilding that one is going to cost at least 500 bucks, mine went out in my 93 and i replaced it for 225.00 bucks, salvage yards are full of those things right now, good luck.

Rebuilding a transfer case is not as easy as you think . It would probably be cheaper and easier to replace it
