OK, so I'm auditioning for the role of Alex Wilder [the runaways, Marvel comic] and I'm a bit stumped. I fit the bill of an African-American teen but I can't tell if we look the same. Then I wondered: do I have to be an exact representation of the comic teen? Like, would you rather have an exact look-a-like of the guy or a guy who resembles him a bit and can play the part to a tee?

You don't need to look like the character at all, just sound like they do. Many very feminine looking women voice males so it is definitely not necessary.
Uh, Samuel L Jackson plays Nick Fury, and Nick Fury is supposed to be white. So it doesn't matter if you look like the character or not! :D It's all about acting skills, and they can always use makeup to doody you up to look like the character. Now that I think about it, Michael Chiklas isn't exactly made of rock...
