I know the the term agrarian republic has to do with Thomas Jefferson and his presidency but I do not understand what aspects it is referring to. I am trying to study these terms for my finals but when I look up the term agrarian republic it just brings me to general information of Thomas Jefferson. Anyone know? Thanks.

Thomas Jefferson thought that the ideal government would be an Agrarian Republic. He saw this as a Representative Democracy in which the primary vocation of its citizens was farming. His feeling was that the best form of republican government started from the ground up with the farmer as the executive of his farmland which was a member of State government which looked out for local farming interests, which was a member of a loose federal government that was responsible for the security of the states.
While this is somewhat of an over simplification, it generally represents Jefferson's views. The basis for this belief was the conviction that farming and agriculture was the only truly beneficial and pure symbiotic relationship between man and nature. He felt that it was the only kind of industry that could support the republican values necessary to sustain a republican government over a long period of time. He felt that the pursuit of wealth for wealth's sake alone would pervert the core republican value that was also necessary for its survival. That value was putting the public interest above individual interest.
looks like you are in Abby Chandler's class!! hahaha My thought was that most of the politically influential people in the South were Plantation owners.... definitely not small farmers
