You sound more like you'd look Brazilian rather than Portuguese. Many people confuse the Portuguese (who are Europeans) with Brazilians, who speak Portuguese but who are typically of mixed racial origins, particulary Portuguese and African (black). The Portuguese most closely resemble their Spanish neighbors and other Southern Europeans like the Italians, basically whites with a higher percentage of dark hair/eyes and with sharper facial features typical for Southern Europe. You, being Italian and black, probably look like a common Brazilian type rather than Portuguese, so the person was probably confused.

EDIT: I personally find both Portuguese and Brazilian women very attractive. Many others do as well.

They are so gorgeous, many of them have Arab or Greek qualities about them. Can I just say they are some of the curviest women I have met? Like seriously the smallest waists with the biggest butts! I noticed a lot of them have gigantic dark eyes long eyelashes and they have dark hair some have olive skin some are fair. The only downside to these girls is they are quite hard to get at because they usually only date other Portuguese men...

Here in portugal we have a LOT of people from the former colonies (africa). As spanish, italian, portuguese etc (mediterranian cultures) have similar features, it´s pretty normal that people ask you that.
