I just tried to play an mp4 file and the answer is yes, as well as avi files. Personally I prefer VLC but hey that's me, VLC has an RTSP interface that allows one server to stream VOD all over the house.
Personally I put a Blu-Ray burner in one of my computers, which also drives my Yamaha receiver through a SoundBlaster X-fi card and a Creative Digital IO module which lets me hook a spdif cable to drive my receiver. My Burner is made by LG, I have a couple of terabytes of storage, streaming video and drive a Sony Bravia through the HDMI out on my video card. Doing it all through the computer made it easy for me and cheaper.
Using your computer and a Blu-ray burner is much less expensive than getting a separate Blu-ray player. I run the whole thing under Linux although I could just as easily run it through XP or Vista. The other advantage is that you get storage.
So yes to mpeg4 through the divx player (the computer version I actually paid for). The LG burner I use is pretty good, but I have to say the star of the show are the two Klipsch LaScala II's as my front channels and the two Klipsch Heresy III rear channel and of course the Klipsch RT-10D subwoofer, that's what really makes the thunder.
it won't play an avi
