I am a UK citizen and am looking to visit a friend and take a holiday in Canada for 3 weeks. Big problem is. In 2008 I entered Canada on a work visa and stayed legally working until Feb 2011. Whilst living in Canada I opened a bank account and 2 visa card accounts. I left Canada and returned to the UK but still owed money on my Canadian accounts, the total owed is less than $2500 but it's still a debt. I am worried that this will affect my entry into Canada & I will be denied because of the unpaid debt.
Does anyone know if the the Canadian immigration will have records of this unpaid debt and bring it up.
BTW. I have set up an arrangement with all my creditors and am paying them slowly
Update:Let me just make things a bit clear! My 3 year stay in Canada was completely legal. I had a work permit and left Canada once this ended. So I'll have no issues with immigration on that side.
I have contacted the Canadian immigration, but they cannot clear this up for me. They say it is unlikely to be an issue, but they cannot give me a yes or no.
I just don't want to fly all the way there to be denied entry.
I know it was a stupid thing to do, but I am in the process of fixing it.
I just want to see if there is anyone else who has done the same or similar thing.

Hi,
Don't worry about your debt as you have made up your mind to lay off it so just apply with confidence (as you did in first time). Your unpaid debt will not be the cause of acceptance or rejection.

The financial debt would effect your credit but shouldn't effect your status under immigration policy. Owe the Government and skip out, that I'm sure they'd remember though lol.
Much bigger issie is overstaying a work visa to the tune of 3 years; won't go over well because that is messing with the government while shooting yourself in the foot credibility-wise. My guess is this round the trust as abiding by any agreement or obligation asked of you will be non existent; I'm not immigration but my guess is a re-apply won't be received well.
Fingers crossed you atone and they show compassion despite that.
(even though it's a sin it's not like i can condemn someone who wants to be here and work - even if you broke govt policy doing it; not like you robbed a bank or nuthin' LOL Good thing they don't know about that eh :)
Seeing as your British the Canadians who love you very much make sure that wont happen so you can have a safe and happy trip in Canada.
I don`t think it would be a big problem as long as you pay the debt back.
wow that is funny mate you have money for a 3 week trip but you can not clear your debt.
you may be stopped at customs but you can contact them and ask them yourself.
I don't think so that your financial history could play any role in your visa application".
