my computer is HP Pavilion running Windows Vista 32 bit 250 gig HDD (preloaded, purchased from Best Buy so i have no disk). A bias test shows that the HDD needs replaced. what i want to find out is can i copy the os to my external HDD, buy a new internal and put the os from the external to internal. something else the computer only loads in safe mode.

Yes, you can do that with disk imaging programs like Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image.
Those will make an image file which is a complete backup of your existing HDD. The data, applications, registry- everything. Then after physically replacing the old internal HDD you'd need to run the program (usually from a boot CD) and restore your image from the external drive.

If you have more than one partition, try ghost your os partition then keep in other partition.
Then copy all to external.
After replace internal, just ghost back.
By the way, unsure can ghost or not if have hard disk problem.
No it has to be internet, take it back to best buy and see what they say.
