Right now I have the free version of Avast, and I really don't feel like it's protecting me at all. if someone could recommend a free or cheap antivirus that has good protection that would be awesome, thanks! :)

Go through Avast setting, untick SafePrice, tick do not track - get the idea ? make Avast yours - set it up right.
now add free malwarebytes:
https://www.malwarebytes.org/
then change the setting - open malwarebytes>setting>detection & protection>non-malware>change setting for PUPs & PUMs to "treat as malware" also tick "scan for rootkits"
Your now covered for virus, malware & pups - now take a look at your browsers.

I'm not sure what your definition of cheap is , so I might miss the mark here. As for "buy versions" I'd go with WEBROOT. it is excellent.
If you feel unsafe and want to fix that do this;
Do NOT use AVG McAFEE or NORTON ever period.
Do not use CHROME or IE , ever , period.
Next , use FIREFOX with these addons : NO SCRIPT , EDGE Block , DISCONNECT (the main one , theres 3 optionals you may like as well)
AVAST is quite decent especially if you explore the settings and get it just the way you want it.
COMODO ...prosd and cons , cons first ;;these guys will spam you to buy if you dont change settings. IThey offer alot of "extra programs and services , they are decent but can be a pain in the a#$ honestly.
Now for the pros ; their firewall is excellent , and so are their secure DNS servers. ( seriously exceptional actually , Ive speed tested their dns name resolutions etc, they have the fastest two in the USA and several top 20s across the globe depending on where you are.)
They also have a sandboxing feature that is one click-easy-to-use.
one more con I forgot to mention ..their help line will REALLY try to sell you their upgrade packs... I mean they'll try really really hard... it sucks for the free version guys. if you do buy it , then yes their service is spot on.
Now , once you have your AV in and Firefox with addons installed you can choose to really beef your security up if you like.
extras:
HITMAN PRO , the ALERT plugin. This will protect against browser hijackers and redirects. Free version
WINPATROL , free version is fine, super smalll and light weight , it stops ANYTHING from adding itself to your START UP.
I cannot tell you how many times it has saved me when I missclicked... The best AV on earth can't stop you from clicking wrong sadly :P
anyway , good luck!
Avast is one of the better free ones out there. Unless you're visiting unsafe sites often, you really don't need to pay for anti-virus. Run Malwarebytes alongside Avast and you'll be fine.
I personally use Malware. It will automatically scan a webiste o google before you enter it letting you know if it is safe, under suspect, or not safe at all. If you don't want that, I would select Norton; However, know that you can still get a virus going on random websites and downloading random stuff from untrusted sites. Please use caution when you scan the internet! Also, with malware you can schedule regular scans to make sure nothing has gotten into your files.
All my customers an d myself use either the free or paid version of AVG. But onlt =y get the free version from http://free.avg.com./ Whatever you iuse, you should have some kind of backup, a carelesss click in a rogue site can be telling your active anti-virus to allow something regardless. So download the free scanner from http//malwarebytes.org. Set it ti treat all it finds as malware, and to scan for rootkits. Manull update it once or twice a month and et it update when you want to scan. Then quarantine all. Since the free is not an active protection it will never have been told to ignore anything.
$20 dollars a year gets you the full version of Malwarebytes which is the best out there. Alternately you can use the free Malwarebytes as a scanner and ZoneAlarm free security suite as your active one. That's what I use and I rarely have problems.
There are so many available in the market for device like computers, mobiles and tablets. You can choose from following Norton 360, Norton Internet Security, AVG Security
Avast is Best Choice
Malwarebytes
Malwarebytes rootkit
Spybot
Glary utilities.
Avira... the best antivirus!
