Definitely go with the Canon product lines. Typically Canon has flexibility of working well with variety ranges due to wide range of availability of accessories. Here are main factors.
1. Weight is usually lighter than other brands.
2. Better over all battery lasting.
3. Most popular brand in professional level as well flexibility.
4. High quality due to good CMOS/CCD chip usage.
5. Good to excellent lighting.
6. Shutter speed is optimal/fast, comparative fast as or better.
Depends on what you want to do and how far you what to go into photography. If you want total flexibility then go with Canon. It's the lens choices and range that should dictate your choice between the two camera lines. I just went through a complete analysis of both lines and as a former Nikon film photographer, I went with Canon. If I was only going to shoot in a studio then I would have gone with Nikon, but since I do studio and event photography, I required the flexibility of the Canon lens line.

I juz bought a EOS 350D becuz I love Canon brands... and my previous camera is EOS SLR camera too... - to re-use my existing lens.
The other reason I chose EOS 350D becuz it's lighter than Nikon.. esp. for a lady user like me..
Maybe you would like to compare it via
