Nikon cheaper (Not in the thousands per) lenses are a lot better for the most part, except like 1 canon prime lens. That being said they are both good and it comes down to preference. Also the D5100 is very good at photography and video.The 50mm is good for portraits, but on a vacation I would say go with the 35mm f/1.8 prime instead. Useful in more situations. Again preference though. Also if you plan to take landscapes or self portraits be sure to get the wireless remote and a tripod.
