Hello!
So, I've been saving up to buy a DSLR camera, and I finally have enough money to purchase one of these. Okay, first off, I'm NOT an expert with a camera. However, I really want a quality entry-level camera I can use for photography and making short films (5-10 min.). I'm pretty set on the Nikon, as I've messed around with it in Best Buy, but I wanted to know what others think. Feel free to give me any advice, what I should know about these cameras and which would fulfill my needs. Thank you in advance.

Have you messed around with the T3i? I had to make the same decision and I personally liked the feel of the T3i much more than the D5100. So even though the specs on the D5100 were a bit more preferable for me, I chose the T3i anyway. I also didn't like how the live view on the D5100 wasn't smooth, it looked like it was going at 5 fps, while the T3i looked like it was going at 30 fps.
It seems that the T3i's specs are a bit more preferable for you since you're going to be making short films and it's great on the T3i.
The T3i has a 12 minute limit and the D5100 has a 20 minute restrict. Whether you get the full time or now not depends upon your memory card and how speedy the sensor will overheat which varies with temperature. There is a authorized restrict of 29 minutes and fifty nine seconds that has anything to do with import obligation rates. My camera (Sony a77) will shoot that a lot in one clip and so will mirrorless cameras.
There is no better... only your skill with a dslr will make it better.
Both of these companies make the world's best consumer level gear so pick one.
I use nikon and love it.one thing i have noticed between canon and nikon is that nikon has better low light performance than canon in the end the choice is yours! :)
