MSI makes pretty nice no frills netbooks with good battery life and bright LED screens. Toshibas have a great chiclet type keyboard and look stylish. HP and Dells are not really the most remarkable in this category - generally it's MSI, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, etc. HP mini's are quite well regarded though.
If you don't mind the reduced battery life, Gateway makes some AMD based subnotebooks that are really just larger screen netbooks (1366x760, 11.6" and larger).
I'll tell you the good and the bad about the one netbook I know, which is from this reputable, small business: http://onlynetbooks.com/
good: low cost, nice looking, lightweight, easy to carry around, simple; email, google, messenger, youtube, Office, MP3; conveniently small
bad: videos play pixillated; cannot play online flash games (i.e. can go on facebook, but not use apps); it comes preloaded with all the software (which you can restore at any time) but you can't add to it. WYSIWYG; if you don't want a small unit, this would be too small
I love it. I recommend it all the time, for the main reason that it's $99 but also because it is so lightweight and simple. I never carried my laptop around, but this I take with me most days, even to just have fun at Panera.
I would suggest hp or dell both good company

Stay away from HP or Dell. they're junk. Best brands are ASUS, Acer, Toshiba, IBM/Lenovo even though they cost more.
im extremely tech savvy... anyway, number one, it does not matter what brand, they are all the same, think about color, style, size, battery life, and speakers.... trust me, brands are stupid, its like water bottle companies, its all the same... anyway also try to go for at least 1 gig of ram... oh, and get windows 7 starter since xp isnt too great...
