Hi computer brains,
I had an HP printer which was working fine until a few weeks ago. Then I had intermittent problems printing until it stopped. I bought a new Cannon printer and downloaded the software with new cables, etc. The msgs tell me that the printer is not recognized. The fix it screen tells me that there is no connection. I checked everything, plugs, unplug, cables, etc...everything is plugged it but the printer won't work.
I am suspecting that it is my computer. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix it? I've got a good virus program installed (don't know if a virus has something to do with it though) Thanks.
Update:Its difficult to choose a best answer. You're all great. I tried all of youses :)

On computers running Windows Operating Systems, click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>PRINTERS AND FAXES.
Look for your new printer on the list of installed printers. If there is no check mark next to your new printers name, right click on it and choose SET AS DEFAULT.
While you are at it, you might as well delete/uninstall your old printer.
.
Your problem sounds like you have not installed the correct driver for your operating system (this is very important - there are 2 types of xp, 32-64 bits, 10 types of vista 32-64 bit). try again, remove the cable your printer from the PC!
go on the official HP website (http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html) write the correct name of your printer, choose your preferred language, choose the operating system, click on FULL FEATURE AND SOFTWARE DRIVER, after you finished downloading click run, after installation restart your PC and connect printer cable to the pc ; wait to recognize that hardware (printer) and ready to use. go to printer and faxes (device and printer) ,right click with your printer - set as a default printer. open one doc. ctrl+P -ok . that's all !!
Good luck !
Uninstall the old printer driver and software, the problem is most likely cause because your O/S still thinks it is the default printer, you will most like have to restart your computer.
After restarting it, click on Control Panel and click on Hard and Sound, then click Devices and Printers. Select your current printer as the default.
Try installing the printer as a LOCAL printer. When it prompts you to select a Port, create a new TCP/IP port using the IP of the PC the printer is attached to.
Assuming that you're plugging your printer into one of your computer's USB ports, have you tried a different USB port?
Reinstall the drivers from the disk or find them on hps website
