Are you going to be there on a cruise? Cruise critic is an excellent website that gives a good overview of how to get to Florence from Livorno. It takes about 1.5 hours to get there by train.
Check the "getting around" section. If you are planning on taking in Pisa as well, it might be a bit of a squeeze trying to get that in with Florence. I have been to both Florence and Pisa and if you only have one day I say spend as much as you can in Florence. Pisa is great, but Florence is magnificent. :)
Pisa is only a fifteen minute train ride from Livorno, so you can check train schedules to Pisa when you are looking up Florence. Train is really the only way to go if you want to get there on the cheap.
