NO COMPARISON...The DirecTV Tivo (EXCEPT for the R10 unit) Can be modified so you can install up to a 500GB hard drive with InstantCake Software, turn on the USB ports with PTVnet Software, network the DirecTV Tivo with a USB Ethernet Adapter like the Linksys USB200m or Netgear FA-120 so you can transfer the shows/movies over your homes wired/wireless network to a networked PC for editing and burning the shows/movies to DVD using TyTools 10R4. You can use TivoWebPlus from any internet location to access your DirecTV Tivo to program shows/movies in case your not going to make it home in time. There are more things too, just check out http://www.dvrplayground.com/ and http://www.dvrupgrade.com/ for more info on these subjects, or send me an email and I can show you how and give you links with step by step procedures with pictures. Also DirecTv Tivos functionality is a heck of alot better than DirecTVs new DVRs.
DirectV DVRs can record two shows at the same time and let you watch a third!!! JUST LIKE the REAL Tivo does better. Do not believe me, just check out the links I gave you, Look for all the issues people with DirecTV DVRs compalin about.. PLUS with a DirecTV DVR YOU do NOT own it, they ONLY lease their units now..
If you want to learn more for your DirecTV Tivo then please feel free to email me and I will get you ALL the info you need.
In fact here is ALLthe info would send first, check it out if you want 200 Hours or 700 Hours of recording time on your DirecTV Tivo:
First check out site #1 it has forums that explain how to hack your DirecTV Tivo and Tivo brand Tivo's so that you have Networking abilities on your D Tivo which allow MRV (multiroom Viewing if you have more than one D Tivo), HMO (Home media Option) which allows you to have a PC connected to your home network that can be used as a server for your MP3's and Pictures to be shown on your D Tivo. Once you hack the unit/s (HAS TO BE A SERIES 1 OR SERIES 2 DirecTV Tivo or Series 1 and Series 2 Tivo) you can apply some programs so that you can download the shows/movies from the decrypted programs stored on your D Tivo onto a PC for veiwing/Burning onto a DVD. If you have more questions I can give you alot more details if you email me. I have used these site below to aid me in Hacking 5 DirecTV Tivos (Qty2-SD-DVR40, HDVR2,Qty2- DSR704). I have HMO, MRV, can access over the internet with gotomydvr.com, can download shows/movies from all the units.
Site #2 is where you purchase the software necessary to upgrade the D Tivo, look for either their kits or if you want to upgrade yourself look at InstantCake 3.1 or 6.2, PTVnet, Slicer. (InstantCake is the operating system/ software displays you see on the screen, PTVnet is the software to boot the ISO disk you download onto your PC when you connect a NEW hard drive and it enables the USB ports and allows networking, The Slicer lets you get/receive upgrade from DirecTV without losing all your previous hacks upon software upgrades.)
#3 is a forum to get the other necessary software patches to allow you to decrypt the DirecTV signal before it is stored onto the D Tivo’s harddrive. And a patch to allow downloads of the shows/movies from the D Tivo. (Superpatch-67all-nutkase, and superpatch-62a, Tytool 10R4, and others)
#4 a forum on HOW TO and questions and answers
#5 a GREAT display of instruction with pics on how to remove the hard drive form the Tivo unit and install all the hacks)
The DTV DVR R15 model holds up to 100 hrs of recordings, shows the % of available space on the DVR on the My Playing List, has Caller ID, Does not require to keep the phone line connection like tivo for daily calls, and a 90 minute live cache (where you can watch a channel and keep it paused or rewind in live tv). The 3 main features you would loose with switching would be the tivo suggestions and wishlist (which most people dont use anyways) and the ability to switch between the 2 tuners by pressing 1 button. On the R15 you would have to go into My Playing list and play the show from there or manually change the tv channel to the other one that you are recording.
Alot of people like Tivo because they are used to it, and dont like change, which is understandable when you are used to one thing and switch to something different.
From what you wrote, it's exactly how much it should be. Which is true. 10+7 = 17. It's $10 bucks for the HD and $7 for the rental dvr rental fee. Which is not including your total bill. BQ: I'm not sure if that's true, you would have to call and ask. In case you don't want it, just ask the sales representative that you want to cancel. Hassle free... ** What I heard from them is you can record in that particular dvr and watch it any room you want it including the rooms without the dvr. I'm not sure about the whole HD and non HD dvr situation. Call and ask... It's your best option and the most factual. It's easy!
The TiVo has less space but it is SO much easier to use and has so many more settings. The DirecTV DVR sucks, literally, it freezes, errors, has much less settings, and is much tougher to use.

Directv

the TiVo box records 40hrs..while the DirecTV one records up to 100hrs..
