I use FlashGet with rapidshare, and notice that when i download a file that is 1mb, it says on my log that i have actually downloaded 5mb.
I then downloaded the 1mb file again, this time without FlashGet and on the log it only added 1mb, meaning that i only used 1 mb for that second download.
Now my question is then, do download accelerators like FlashGet actually waste my internet?

I think in general Download accelerators are a waste of time.
When you have a dial-up connection it might speed your downloading a bit. but when you fast internet connection you might gain a couple of seconds on a download. I never use them any more.
They only allow you to resume your download or to find more sources for your file, but if you have a 2Mb connection you will never download at this speed.
The TCP/IP Protocol steals about 5% of your Internet speed.
Good Luck !!
what they do is once someone downloads something it download it to "flashgets" server HDD and then you download it from their servers to your computer so it downloads faster.. so if you are the first to download something with flashget then yes you are using internet on the upload
