I have a MacBook Pro laptop and a Lenovo ThinkPad. I don't like using either one as a laptop. I hook up a 22" widescreen monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers to either one. I can type and do things much quicker turning into a desktop than using on the laptop itself.

The purpose of a notebook is mobility but the trade off is that you generally don't have the same features as a desktop. There's not any other option. If you want to be mobile you have to use a notebook or other mobile device. So there's really no preference other than you prefer to be mobile. You can have both, however.
