Epstein-Barr Virus
EBV infections range from so mild it is barely noticeable to severe. The infection can be asymptomatic, or it may cause symptoms similar to those of a cold or flu. For many infected with EBV, the onset of symptoms will start off mild and develop slowly. As the infection progresses, the following symptoms may appear: a persistent sore throat lasting two or more weeks, swollen lymph nodes (usually in the neck, groin and armpits), a persistent fever (around 102 degrees Fahrenheit), fatigue, and discomfort.
The throat may be so painful and swollen that swallowing is difficult. For some, the fever may run higher, or rashes may develop. Sometimes the infection causes the spleen to swell or spreads to the liver. Rarely, heart or central nervous system problems may occur
