Hi everyone,
My semesters at my community college cost roughly $3500 give or take a few hundred. I had to take this semester off for financial reasons so I have this question for someone who would know. I was late applying for my FAFSA for this semester and after deciding I was taking the semester off, I applied for the aid in advance so I would be ready to go in January at the start of the 2nd semester this year. I was granted my usual $6,000something aid, but I won't be using all of it since I took this semester off. My bill for the school will be the classes I take after January (roughly $3500). What happens to the aid that I qualified for that is left over from the tuition costs of my classes in January? Someone help, please! Thanks!! (BTW: Yes my aid does cover virtually all tuition costs for my school. It is very cheap and I commute from my house so I do not have any housing expenses, utility expenses, meal plan bills, etc.)

If you applied and awarded 6,000 for you attending both the fall and the spring semesters and you end up not attending in the fall then the amount of your aid would be cut in half to 3000 for the spring semester. If your costs for the spring are 3,500 and you get only 3,000 in aid then you will need to pay the school the extra 500.
$3,500 for a community college sure doesn't sound very cheap to me (my local CC costs <$1,500 a semester). But if your aid ($3,000) is more than your total costs at the school (say $1,500 like mine) then you would be given the excess ($1,500) to do with as you wish.
